Close cruel mink farms, say animal welfare groups

The government needs to close three fur farms that kill up to 200,000 mink for fashion every year, an animal welfare charity has said.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) said a ban was the only solution to what it described as a cruel practice, adding that Ireland needed to follow the example of European countries including Austria, the Netherlands and the UK which had already banned fur farming.

Eighty per cent of those questioned in a Red C poll for the ISPCA believed that farming and killing of animals for their fur should be banned.
